The Diocese of Lango has announced a historic public lecture to commemorate the life and legacy of Archbishop Janani Jakalia Luwum, part of the activities marking the 49th memorial of the slain Church of Uganda prelate.

Scheduled for February 14, 2026, at Canon Lawrence Campus, Boroboro in Lira City, the lecture is organized in partnership with All Saints University Lango and is the first of its kind within the diocese.

Church leaders say the event seeks to deepen public understanding of Luwum’s ministry, moral witness, and enduring national significance.

Bishop Prof Alfred Olwa, Bishop of Lango Diocese, described the lecture as “a very significant move,” emphasizing its importance for younger generations.

“Many young people today do not remember or even know about Archbishop Janani Luwum. This lecture is meant to inform, to reflect on his life and ministry, and to draw lessons by which we can live as a nation,” Bishop Olwa said.

The keynote will be delivered by internationally renowned Anglican theologian Bishop Ashley Null, invited by the Province of the Church of Uganda.

His lecture will explore the role of Christian life in leadership, the shaping of national identity, and social transformation — themes closely associated with Luwum’s legacy.

Prominent Ugandan diplomat Dr. Olara Otunnu is expected to respond to Bishop Null’s presentation, while Canon Justice Dr. James Ogoola, former Principal Judge, will offer reflections on Bishop Olwa’s address.

Canon Lawrence Campus holds historical significance as one of the institutions where Archbishop Luwum studied. Church leaders say the venue underscores the link between Luwum’s formative years and the values promoted through the memorial activities.

Martin Ongom Owiny, co-caretaker Vice-Chancellor and Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor of All Saints University Lango, said the event marks a milestone for the Boroboro-based campus.

“Canon Lawrence has hosted very high-profile Ugandans, including Archbishop Janani Luwum and Ambassador Olara Otunnu.

Now it becomes a residential campus under a reputable university, offering opportunities for leadership and professional development,” Ongom said.

Memorial service preparations

Preparations are ongoing for the main 49th Janani Luwum Memorial Service, scheduled for February 16 at Mucwini, with the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda presiding.

Pilgrims from Lango, West Lango, and Kitgum dioceses have already been flagged off, and choirs and artists including Ambrose Lucky O. are set to perform in Lango, Acholi, and English.

National leaders, including the President, are expected to attend.

Archbishop Luwum, killed in 1977 during the Idi Amin regime, is remembered nationally and internationally as a martyr of faith and justice, with his legacy continuing to inspire leadership, courage, and moral integrity in Uganda.
